Four descendants of Thomas Sherwood (1585-6) came together in 2022 to develop a repository for historical information on the surname of Sherwood and other similar spellings of that name. The objective was to create an accessible database on all known Sherwood's to include documented sources of that information as well as pertinent notes. The database is inter-active and fluid, to allow for changes when new information is obtained and for the addition of new generations as well as documents and pictures. The database is open for use by Sherwood's, by individuals who have Sherwood's in their ancestry, and by historians or genealogists.
New News - We have just learned on September 18, 2023, through DNA testing that Hugh Sherwood, the progenitor of Sherwoods that emigrated to Maryland, was related to the two Thomas Sherwoods that emigrated to New England in the 1630's. DNA testing cannot tell us exactly how the men were related. That can only be determined through future research and record documentation. However, it is evident that Hugh and the two Thomases shared a common ancestor, probably within one or two generations.
This is important. Neither the New England Sherwoods nor the Maryland Sherwoods have been able to identify their early ancestry in England prior to the Thomases or Hugh. This may help us with the English research process to identify our ancestry in England further back in time. Special thanks to Robert D. Sherwood, whose Big Y DNA test helped us prove a close genetic relationship between the progenitors of the New England and Maryland branches of the Sherwood family.
